Carry the Yoke I Have Placed on You

1 min read

Carry the yoke that I have placed on you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart and your soul will find tranquility. (Matthew 11:29)

The attitude of our Lord that He continually maintained while on earth was gentleness and humility. For us who are Christians, to find the rest of which He speaks, we need to do two things: first, to “carry the yoke that I have placed on you”; and second, to “learn from Me.” A yoke is a wooden bar placed on the back of an ox so that it cannot move freely and so can work steadily. In the land of Judea, a yoke was always carried together by two buffaloes rather than placed on a single buffalo. The yoke was fitted onto the buffalo by its master; and therefore the Lord, who is our master, tells us to “carry His yoke upon us.” This yoke is given to us by God and not by man or by the devil. It is given by God, and chosen by us.

Whatever is determined by God, if it is taken up by us, will make us happy. If I am content, I will have peace. There is no reason to be displeased, because I do not run away from the yoke of God that God has determined for me.
